Curriculum

New York State Common Core Standards
In January 2011 the New York State Board of Regents voted to approve the adoption of the new Common Core Learning Standards (NYSCCLS) for English Language Arts and Literacy for grades pre-K through 12. We will be working to align curricula and instruction with the new NYS Common Core Standards during the 2011 - 2012 school-year. You can view the new NYS Common Core Standards by clicking the following link:

The following documents provide an easy-to-read format for exploring the English Language Arts NYSCCLS for grades pre-K through 5. The grade-level documents allow you to see all of the ELA NYSCCLS for the listed grade-level in isolation. The preK-5 documents allow you to see how the standards in each of the six ELA Strands build in complexity year-to-year during the elementary grades.

Instruction

ICSD Elementary Literacy Study Groups

Literacy study groups provide ongoing opportunities for ICSD educators to come together to engage in collaborative dialogue regarding curriculum, instruction and assessment
. In these study groups we read and discuss professional texts, watch videos of model lessons, share resources and ideas, look at student work, and engage in collaborative inquiry around student learning and behavior. All elementary literacy study groups are facilitated by the Primary Literacy Staff Developer as one way of supporting evidence-based literacy instruction in K-5 classrooms and assisting teachers in integrating instructional best practices and the use of formative assessment data to perpetuate a balanced comprehensive literacy program in their classrooms.

During the 2010-2011 school year the elementary literacy study groups are explorng the following professional texts:

ICSD educators can find out about and join current literacy study group offerings by viewing the District Catalog on www.mylearningplan.com.

Videos

See videos of some of our outstanding teachers implementing strategy-based instruction in elementary classrooms. These teachers participated in a two-year study group focusing on small-group literacy instruction. This approach enables teachers to diversify the instruction so that all students access the grade level curriculum in inclusive settings.

  • Andrea Rennie Grade 1 , at Beverly J. Martin, shares a whole group lesson on expanded vocabulary, a small group lesson on fluency, and works one-on-one with a student on author's purpose.
  • Caren Arnold Grade 2 , at Northeast, provides a whole-group lesson on text-to-text connections, a small-group lesson on non-fiction text features, and works one-on-one with a student working on using punctuation and captions to aid fluency.
  • Lynn VanDeWeert Grade 1, at Beverly J. Martin, shares a whole-group lesson on making connections to books, a small-group lesson on short vowel sounds, and works one-to-one to use prediction to understand challenging texts.
  • Marty Beth McDaniel Grade 2, at Northeast Elementary, provides a whole-group lesson on non-fiction text features, a small group lesson on using punctuation to support fluency, and works one-on-one on written retelling.
  • Carol Dentes Wilhelm Grade 3, at South Hil, shares a whole-group lesson on cross-checking for accuracy, a small-group lesson on using graphic organizer to write summaries, and she works one-on-one making text-to-self connections.

This wiki provides resources and information for teachers using Love Those Letters.  Love Those Letters is a collaborative project between Carol Cedarholm, Ithaca City School District reading specialist and Family Reading Partnership to help all children learn and love letters. Started during an ICSD sabbatical in the Spring of 2010, this project has blossomed into a powerful and engaging set of materials that are helping thousands of young children learn the alphabet. Materials include a beautiful ABC book, a DVD, desk strips, posters, small and large cards, charts, a matching game and a big book.
